Sho Hanawa fired his first warning shot for the 2008
British Formula Renault championship with a superb pole
position for round 3 of the Winter Series at Croft. A
single qualifying session in damp conditions would decide
the grid for the final two rounds of the annual winter
championship and Sho made great use of his time on track
to claim 2nd on the grid for round 4. Kieren Clark struggled
in the tricky conditions, as did many of the expected
front runners, but kept the car on track to qualify 19th
for both races.
Round 3 of the 4 race series started in drying conditions
with half the grid starting on wet tyres and half gambling
on slicks. Apotex Scorpio Motorsport decided to start
both drivers on wet tyres based on their experience at
the circuit, but a first lap incident saw the race red
flagged and any advantage the wet tyre had evaporated.
Kierens race ended soon after the restart as he was forced
into retirement but Sho battled on as the front runners
slipped backward in the ever drying conditions. Finishing
10th from pole position was disappointing for the team
but Sho could take heart from being the first wet shod
driver across the line.
The final round of the championship brought better fortune
as the track was now fully dry and both Kieren and Sho
could make full use of their new slick tyres. Kieren raced
well and made up four places from his starting position
to conclude his winter campaign with 15th. Starting the
race from the front row, Sho made a reasonable start but
lost out to a charging Bottas. The racing at the front
was fast and furious but Sho handled the pressure well
to take his first podium in Formula Renault competition
and took enough points to finish 4th overall in the championship.
After a successful 2007 campaign Apotex Scorpio Motorsport
now turns its attention to a busy winter testing schedule
ahead of the new 2008 season. Race dates will be published
towards the end of the year.
