The first round of the Winter Series was a fresh start
for the Apotex Scorpio Motorsport team, coming off the
back their 3rd place finish in the 2007 Team Championship.
Two new drivers, Sho Hanawa and Kieren Clark joined the
team following their first year driving Formula Renault
machines. Sho competed in the full British Formula Renault
championship with a rival team gaining a best result of
8th at Donington Park, eventually finishing 15th in the
championship. Kieren competed in several rounds of the
Formula Renault BARC championship gaining a best result
of 4th at Snetterton.
The single qualifying session at the first Winter Series
round meant each driver would have to set two fast times
to optimise their position for both Rounds 1 and 2. Sho
made the best of the session beating his best ever qualifying
result to put him self 4th and 5th on the grid for the
two races. Kieren showed good form in his first full championship
event to place himself a respectable 10th and 12th from
a field of 32 cars.
Cold conditions for both races saw each driver struggle
on the first lap of both races. Kieren showed excellent
race craft to avoid the inevitable incidents in the midfield
and brought the car home 12th for Round 1 but struggled
for pace in Round 2 eventually finishing 17th. Sho’s
qualifying performance meant he had to race hard from
the word go in both races. Keeping championship favourites
behind him for the entire race, Sho impressed with his
best results yet in the full championship eventually finishing
7th and 8th.
The final two rounds of the 2007 Formula Renault Winter
Series take place at Croft on the 10th November.
