Triple race winner Will Bratt saw his Formula Renault
UK title campaign continue to gather momentum at Donington
Park National Circuit today during the 11th and 12th rounds
of the season, the Apotex Scorpio Motorsport sensation
moving into the championship top three for the first time
in his career with yet another podium result.
Having qualified fifth on the grid for both of today’s
races, the 19-year-old was confident he would be able
to challenge for a podium result but with heavy rain affecting
the first encounter this morning, the race was red flagged
and declared a result after just four racing laps meaning
Will didn’t have time to make the inroads he wanted
to.
Round 12, however, was a different story and on a track
surface which was almost completely dry, Will immediately
started to show the pace and performance which has seen
him take three race victories and two pole positions so
far this season.
Quickly moving up into fourth place after a good start,
Will started to chase down Duncan Tappy in third position
and on the second tour of the scheduled 16-lap race, the
Adderbury teenager produced a great late-braking move
at Goddards Chicane to move into the top three.
Pulling away from Tappy, Will also started to reel in
second-placed Riki Christodoulou and began to trade fastest
laps. Into McLeans on the ninth lap, the University of
Oxford scholar was right under the rear wing of Christodoulou’s
car but just unable to make a decisive pass.
At this point rain began to fall but the real drama would
follow on lap 12 when Christodoulou crashed out of the
race at Coppice Corner after colliding with the stranded
car of Paul Rees. All of the drivers started to experience
some grip issues due to the onset of the light rain but
the incident at Coppice resulted in the red flags being
shown.
Declared a result after 11 laps, Will took second position
– his fifth podium finish of the season –
and is now nine-points clear in third place in the 2007
Formula Renault UK Championship standings with eight more
races to run this season.
The Oxon racer’s 48-point haul from the weekend’s
action also helps consolidate third place in the Entrants
Championship table for Loughborough-based Apotex Scorpio,
the team continuing to cement its status as a genuine
front-running outfit.
Commenting on his second place in round 12, Will said:
“It was quite a lot of fun out there and I enjoyed
the racing today, when the rain started to fall towards
the end of the race it became very tricky but I’m
happy to finish in second place and to be back on the
podium again.
“At Coppice there was a lot of water towards the
end, Riki (Christodoulou) went flying off and I nearly
did too but managed to catch the car and then Duncan (Tappy)
managed to get a run on me into the chicane but on count-back
because of the red flags we were second so I’m happy!”
He added: “Obviously the first race never really
got going properly for us, I’m confident we could
have challenged for a podium in the wet but we never had
the true chance to try in the end because of the early
stoppage. We’re third in the championship now which
is great, I think the second half of the season could
be my half and we’ll be strong.”
On the podium at every one of the last three race meetings,
Will heads to Snetterton Circuit two weeks from now, 28th/29th
July, high in confidence but before then there will be
an official test day at the Norfolk track this coming
Thursday, 19th July.
