Fairytale
weekend for Bratt with victory number two
Will Bratt firmly hoisted himself into Formula Renault
UK title contention at Croft Circuit in North Yorkshire
this afternoon after scorching to his second win of the
weekend during the eighth round of the campaign; a superb
end to a truly memorable race meeting for the 19-year-old
and his Apotex Scorpio Motorsport team.
In a near carbon-copy of Saturday’s round seven,
the Adderbury racer started today’s 15-lap encounter
from pole position – having thoroughly dominated
qualifying – and a textbook getaway saw Will assume
a lead he never looked likely to relinquish.
With fellow championship contender Dean Smith in close
quarters for the duration of the race Will never had a
single moment to relax, but a cool-headed and incredibly
mature drive saw the Apotex Scorpio star achieve his second
victory of the season and another 32-point haul which
now sees him move into a clear fifth place in the driver
standings.
“It doesn’t get much better than this”,
said Will at the conclusion of round eight, “We’ve
had the pace to win every weekend this year, and we had
the pace to win at times last year too, but this is the
weekend where everything has finally come together completely
for us and it’s an amazing feeling.
“To take two wins here has been fantastic but the
biggest buzz for me was the way we achieved the double
pole position in qualifying – that was very satisfying.
Everyone in the team knows we’re capable of winning
races and we’ve proven that. I want to thank all
of the guys at Apotex Scorpio, we’re confident this
is the start of a good run for us.”
Rapid pace, consistency and a terrific qualifying strategy
from Apotex Scorpio bosses Jon Pettit and Tony Trevor
all added together to make for an unforgettable weekend
and now Will is confident more race victories will follow.
“Oulton Park is next for us in three weeks and that’s
where we won last year so we can hopefully repeat the
same sort of form”, added Will, “I want to
go there and win both races again and I see no reason
why we can’t do that. It may be a bit tougher as
I will miss the Friday test due to exams but I'm still
sure we can do a good job there.”
Although dogged by some bad luck during earlier rounds
this season, Will and his Loughborough-based team genuinely
feel they have now turned a corner with this weekend’s
supreme performance in which they truly proved to be the
class of the field.
Speaking after round eight, Jon Pettitt said: “It’s
been the perfect weekend really, the whole team got the
strategy of how we were going to go about qualifying absolutely
spot on and then Will did a superb job in the car. We
couldn’t have asked for anything more.
“When it comes to leading a race Will doesn’t
get phased at all, the pressure just doesn’t seem
to cause him any problems. He drove faultlessly all weekend
but we must take this momentum forward. It’s also
nice to beat Fortec (reigning champion entrant and current
series leaders) in this way, we’re the only team
that has been able to do that this season so we take a
lot of satisfaction from it.”
Will’s outstanding victory in Saturday’s seventh
round of the season also led to the Oxon teenager being
awarded the THB Clowes Driver of the Day accolade.
The next two Formula Renault UK races of the season, rounds
nine and 10, will take place three weeks from now on 23rd/24th
June at Oulton Park Island Circuit in Cheshire, the venue
for Will’s maiden category win in 2006.
